Kate Brannigan
Created by Val McDermid

Manchester, England's private investigator, spunky KATE BRANNIGAN, has got a mouth, and she knows how to use it. She's special. One of the best of the new breed of female eyes that popped up in the eighties and nineties, younger and a bit hipper than SHARON, KINSEY et al. Actually, she probably owes more to Liza Cody's ANNA LEE, anyway, come to think of it, although our gal Kate tends to be a bit more political. CrimeTime considers her to be "the best female PI in British crime fiction."

Val McDermid has another series going, also, about lesbian journalist Lindsay Gordon, who gets involved in problems. McDermid has also written a non-series, serial killer novel, The Mermaids Singing, which won the Golden Dagger. She is also the author of the non-fiction book A Suitable Job for a Woman: Inside the World of Women Private Eyes (1995).
