Cynical, seen-it-all former French Foreign Legion soldier and displaced American JOE CANEILI runs the one-man Agence Caneili, which promises "Investigations, Securité and Discrétion assurée" in the city of Papeete in Tahiti. He's not getting any younger, and he's growing increasingly depressed as his island paradise falls prey to outside influences, but he's still a pretty slick operator, not above running a scam or two to help out a client in a series of interesting short stories in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. Creator Peirce has another series going in EQMM as well, relating the adventures of Tahiti's police Commissaire Tama. He's also a regular contributor to the Analog Science Fiction and Fact Digest. He lived in Tahiti for many years. SHORT STORIES
