Cormac Loame

Created by Richard Helms

“I usually don’t give a damn… I take the money, I do the job, and I walk away and leave my clients to pick up the pieces of their lives.”

Anytime the irrepressible Helms launches a new series, it’s worth taking note, and this one looks like a keeper. Miami private eye (and certified tough guy) CORMAC LOAME makes his debut in The Mojito Coast (2013) with a classic bit of bad timing, journeying into Havana on a wandering daughter job just as Castro and Che are making their move.

One of the few self-published writers from the POD boom of the late nineties to prove to have any sort of staying power, Helms has over a dozen well-regarded crime novels in print now, and has been nominated several times for the Private Eye Writers of America Shamus Award, and at least half a dozen times for the Short Mystery Fiction Society Derringer Award, (remaining the only author ever to win that award in two different categories in the same year (2008, for “Paper Walls/Glass Houses,” published in The Back Alley Webzine; and for The Gospel According to Gordon Black,” published in The Thrilling Detective Web Site [Hey! That’s us!]).

His other private eyes include New Orleans gumshoe Pat Gallegher and San Francisco P.I. Eamon Gold. Like Gallegher, Helms has been an actor, a racing car driver, college professor and is currently a forensic psychologist in North Carolina. An expert on sex crimes, he’s served as president of the North Carolina Association for Management and Treatment of Sex Offenders. He lives with his wife, Elaine, in North Carolina.
