“I have only one rule: when you see me doing nothing, do not speak to me.”
Sure, it’s a little hokey at times, definitely low-budget and cutely amateurish, but Whitlock, writer/actress Lauren Tess’ homemade, grrl-empowered 2014 straight-to-YouTube take on the BBC’s Sherlock (and of course Arthur Conan Doyle’s original creation) is clever and fun, and kinda endearing.
There’s something happening here.
In its brief five-part serial, Los Angeles’s cranky, eccentric twenty-something druggie and consulting detective SOPHIE WHITLOCK is on the hunt, looking for the killer responsible for “the dead man in the wood.”
She’s a jeans-and-a-shirt kinda girl, with a lab full of chemicals, powders and potions in her apartment that she shares with her new roomie, Fawn Watkins, a tube-top and short-shorts-wearing New Ager who’s completely flummoxed by the eccentric Sophie.
Just don’t drink the tea…
