Father’s Day

Private Eyes and Their Dads

“Well, Wilmer, I’m sorry indeed to lose you. But I want you to know I couldn’t be fonder of you if you were my own son. But, well, if you lose a son, it’s possible to get another. There’s only one Maltese Falcon.”

Okay, it’s just possible Kaspar Gutman wasn’t the world’s greatest father. I mean, look how he treated his daughter Rhea in the book. And he didn’t even bring her along to John Huston’s 1941 film version.

But these private eyes have good (mostly) relationships with their dads, and those relationships are a key element in what makes these eyes tick… Funny how they’re mostly television series, though. And Canadian.

Jake: Happy Father’s Day, Dad. Malachy: Up yer arse, son.
Preliminary list respectfully submitted by Kevin Burton Smith.
