Crime on My Hands (1944) by George Sanders “To Craig Rice, without whom this book would not be possible. G. S.”
This tongue-in-cheek novel posits the actor Sanders as an amateur sleuth, trying to solve a murder of a movie set. It was Craig Rice who actually wrote the book.
The Maltese Falcon (1929) by Dashiell Hammett “To Jose.”
Jose is the nickname Hammett called his wife Josephine Dolan Hammett. By the time his classic novel got published, however, the Hammetts had separated.
The Last Good Kiss(1978) by James Crumley “To Dick Hugo, grand old detective of the heart.”
Crumley dedicated his book to his friend Richard Hugo’s poem “Degrees of Gray in Phillipsburg,” from which he nicked its title.
