Plucky, sassy housemaid ROSE GALLAGHER, an Irish girl from rough and tumble Five Points in New York City is content sweeping the floors and performing other household chores in a swank Fifth Avenue brownstone, and she’d probably still be there except…
One day her handsome young boss, Thomas Wiltshire, whom Rose is more than a little sweet on, disappears under rather mysterious circumstances. The New York police, however, seem distinctly uninterested, and so Rose takes it upon herself to investigate in the series debut, Murder on Millionaire’s Row (2018), uncovering a bad case of woo-woo (“ghosts, or shades or fae , or half a hundred other things known as the paranormal“) — and crossing paths with a super-secret branch of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency which specializes in investigating such things.
By the novel’s end, Rose has not only cracked the case, but has joined that special branch, becoming the star of a series of frothy paranormal mystery/thrillers, chockfull of romance, fantasy and fun period detail (Mark Twain himself shows up at a seance in one book, for example) and narrated by a smart, no-nonsense and imminently likable hero.
Maybe played by a young Julie Andrews.
