Big Apple eye FORTUNE FANELLI has lived in his beloved Soho for years, long before it was invaded by the trendies and the yuppies. The boutiques and oh-so-trendy bistros and cafes were bad enough, but now it looks like a serial killer’s also moved into the neighbourhood, and left his calling card in the form of a corpse in the window display of a punk clothing store. Fortune takes an interest in the case, shall we say?

A pretty good one, well crafted, with a fine eye for New York neighbourhoods, and a real sense of an ever-evolving community. It won a Shamus, was nominated for an Edgar.

Not too shabby. Not too shabby at all. The biggest disappointment is that there was never a sequel.

 Jack Early is a pen name of Sandra Scoppettone, who dropped the alias when she began writing about lesbian private eye Lauren Laurano, who’s also got some pretty close ties to her neighbourhood .
