Tres Navarre

Created by Rick Riordan

Rick who?

TRES NAVARRE is many things — an unlicensed TexMex private eye, a tequila drinker, a tai chi master and an outcast from academia with a pretty much useless PhD in medieval studies and the proud owner of a cat called Robert Johnson. After ten years in the City by the Bay, he chucks it all and heads on home to San Antonio, hoping to lay to rest old memories of the murder of his father, a former Sheriff. At the end of the first book in the series, Tres decides to stick around. Maybe you can go home again…

In fact, Big Red Tequila (1997) made quite a splash, attracting a lot of attention for a paperback original. The big book (maybe a little too big and wordy according to some) managed to hit the bestseller lists, and even nabbed a Shamus for Best First P.I. Novel.

And by the third novel, The Last King of Texas (2000), Tres had even made the jump to hardcover. An interesting addition to the P.I. ranks, and a series to watch, I thought at the time.

But what did I know? I thought Tres was on his way, but after a fewmore books, Tres was gone. Finit. Kaput.

These days the author, a former middle school teacher, may be a little too busy to put drag Tres back just to put him through his paces again — he’s too busy churning out best-selling young adult series such as the Percy Whatsisname series and The Kane Chronicles…
