The WISE Enquiries Agency

Created by Cathy Ace
(1960–)

It’s a cute premise, anyway…

Based in  Wales, THE WISE ENQUIRIES AGENCY rounds up four “softly poached” female investigators, one each from Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England — hence the name of the agency.

Sixty-something MAVIS MacDONALD, the oldest of the bunch, is from Scotland, a former army nurse with a straight-to-the-point, no-nonsense manner. She’s serves as the collective’s “unofficial leader.”

ANNIE PARKER is over fifty, and a smoker, has a cheeky sense of humour, a rebellious nature and a “broad” Cockney accent. She describes herself at one point as tall, black and “big-bummed” and admits she can be a little clumsy.

CHRISTINE WILSON-SMYTHE comes from money, Irish money, and is, according to Annie, glamorous and “posh.” She speaks five languages and “knows which fork to use.”

CAROL HILL is from Wales, and the is the baby of the group, and pregnant when we meet her in the first novel.

It’s definitely a cozy series, but the mysteries are smart and well plotted, the motives credible and the detectives have a charming line of patter and good-natured chatter that just flows.

But ohmygawd, do they drink a lot of tea!!!
