Carlos & Johann

You’re pulling my leg, right?

JOHANN FRIEDRICH von ALLMEN is the proud owner of one of the most fancy-pants names in the entire shamus game. He’s also the suave dandy “head” of Allmen International Inquiries, a detective agency that specializes in the recovery of stolen objets d’art and other precious trinkets, and with that triple-barreled monicker, you gotta figure he knows what he’s doing, right?

But his clever and pragmatic Guatemalan butler (and business partner) CARLOS de LEON is dubious. Extremely dubious. As in Wooster-and-Jeeves dubious.

Not that von Allmen is necessarily as befuddled as Wooster, but he has his moments. And the family fortune that opens so many doors for him? Well, let’s just say he’s not quite as solvent as he seems–which is why he’s running a detective agency, and various other scams.

I will say, though–von Allmen may be a cad, a scoundrel and a cheat, but the guy’s a likable cad, scoundrel and cheat.

Their cases take the would-be gentleman sleuth and his “man” through all the swellegant places in Europe, where they hobnob with the rich and the famous, in a series of frothy, lightly comic adventures, originally written in German by Martin Suter, a Swiss author, columnist and screenwriter. The books are now being translated into English by New Vessel Press, and a series of made-for-television movies began airing in Germany in 2017, and in North America with subtitles for those of you fortunate enough to get MHz or MHz Choice.
