Created by Michael Stone
One of the more promising eyes of the nineties, Michael Stone’s Denver bounty hunter and sometime private eye STREETER is just a pile of exes. He’s an ex-linebacker, an ex-accountant, an ex-bouncer, an ex-husband (four times) and an ex-fiancé (three times). And he works out of an ex-church.
Obviously, judging from his record with women, under Streeter’s tough battered exterior beats a heart that just can’t say “No.” And Streeter’s at least aware of these contradictions, and as he grows older, he’s not above a little worrying about thinning hair, facial age lines, and finding the right woman.
An entertaining series, building on the traditions of the hard-boiled genre just enough to have a hell of a lot of fun with them, and a protagonist that is human enough to be more than another swinging dick.
And as if that wasn’t enough, the original books sported excellent covers, by then up-and-coming illustrator Owen Smith, successfully evoking the days of the pulps. Sometimes, it seems, you can judge a book by its cover. Recommended.
Although that makes the fact that the series abruptly ended all the more frustrating. Michael Stone, an actual Denver private investigator according to his author bio, wrote four Streeter mysteries and the first one, The Low End of Nowhere, was even nominated for a Shamus.
And then, nothing…
Until 2014, that is, when Lee Goldberg’s Brash Books freed them from obscurity, in paperback and e-book. Although without, alas, the original covers.
