Christian Eyes
According to our old pal Jim Doherty, “there were a series of PI novels produced for the Evangelical Christian market that touted themselves as being in the tradition of Hammett, Chandler, and Macdonald.”
Unfortunately, Jim can’t remember the name of the writer, but he says they were “the only honest-to-God contemporary P.I. novels I’ve ever seen in this market.”
If anyone remembers them, don’t be shy — drop us a line.
In the meantime, though, here are a few other identifiably Christian eyes that Jim suggested:
- Zac Cobb by Jim Walker
- Davey Goldman & Bishop Francis X. Regan by William F. Love
More Francis than Davey, who’s Jewish. - Owen Keane by Terrence Faherty
- Harry Garnish & Sister Bridget O’Toole by Frank McConnell
Those are the original ones Jim suggested. We might add the following eyes, who also explore, sometimes explicitly, sometimes implicitly, Christianity and questions of faith…
- Sister Cecile by Winona Sullivan (a nun P.I.)
- Guila Falcone by Alice Loweecy (an ex-nun P.I.)
- Norm Carpenter & Al Hasp by Jon Breen
A born-again gumshoe and his doubting Thomas of a partner. - Sister Cecile Buddenbrook by Winona Sullivan
A Ferrari-driving, independently wealthy nun with a CIA background who serves God her way — with a P.I. ticket. - Joe LaFlam by Rick Dewhurst
This Seattle gumshoe is a part-time cabbie, and a full-time Christian. - Cal Burke, Connor Sullivan & James Devlin (Phoenix Inc.) by Irene Hannon
- Sister Eve
Has Harley, will travel. - Jane Sunday by Rick Dewhurst
A Vancouver P.I., hired to get the good on the senior pastor of her church. - Sister Holiday Walsh by Margot Douaihy
Another nun P.I., this former punk rocker is gay, mouthy and smokes like a chimney.
List suggested by Jim Doherty. Further additions by Kevin Burton Smith.
