If retired SEAL and former NYPD cop WILL NOVAK had his druthers, he’d probably be kicking back and enjoying a cold beer or two in his crumbling mansion outside New Orleans deep in the Bayou Bonne or his fancy downtown New Orleans apartment on Bourbon Street, or out on the ocean in his forty-foot sailboat, the Sweet Sarah, named after his dead wife, “wrestling with his demons.”

Yeah, it’s that kind of book.

The author used to write romance novels, and it shows. All her detective heroes seem to have tragic pasts and there’s always a lot of demon-wrestling.

But somehow, in between his bouts of dealing with his  issues, Will manages to keep himself busy as a private investigator, occasionally all on his own, and occasionally on behalf of his theoretical partner/boss, Claire Morgan.

I say “theoretical” because Claire, who owns the Missouri-based INTEL detective agency that Will works for, flits in and out this series like a hummingbird, sometimes simply running fingerprints or background checks for him, and occasionally kicking down doors and coming in to rescue his ass, guns a-blazing.

Either way, Will can take it — he’s a six-foot-six bruiser, bronzed from the sun, and possessing, as Claire puts it in one of her novels, “street smart, savvy, good instincts.”

Claire, you see, is a double-dipper — she appears often in Will’s adventures, but she also appears in her own long-running series.
