File this one under “rare.”
Jim Doyle Private Detective and the Train Hold-Up was published in 1939 as a “penny” book published by Whitman Publishing, out of Racine, Wisconsin, and measured a scant 2 5/8″ x 3 5/8.” It had 32 pages, and boasted ten illustrations, and was all held together with a couple of staples punched through, front to back.
Given its size and its cover illustration, it was obviously intended for kids, but who on earth was JIM DOYLE? Was he a radio character, or perhaps a refugee from a movie serial or some long-forgotten B-flick? Or was this his one and only appearance?
He sure looks determined, though, strutting bravely across the tracks there, although I’m not sure that was a good message to send to children.
I have absolutely no idea who this Doyle doofus was, but I’ve seen copies on this little oddity pop up on various online places for well over eighty bucks.
