Yet another of Vernon Warren’s Yankee private eyes that he pumped out on behalf of Britain’s Thriller Book Club, the 1961 novel Farewell by Death starred gumshoe BRAD STERLING, trying to recover seventy-five thousand smackers on behalf of a client who’s been scammed.
Although popular at the time, Warren’s books are now more prized for their exteriors than their interiors. According to John Conquest in his 1990 book Trouble is Their Business, Warren’s books are “much sought after by British collectors for their dust jacket artwork,” while the stories themselves promised “lots of violence, minimal sex and a more than usually shaky grasp of locale and language.”
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
British author Vernon Warren (a pseudonym of George Warren Vernon Chapman) worked for Lloyds of London and emigrated to Canada in 1957, continuing to work in insurance and write detective fiction. He retired in Idaho, but eventually returned to Canada where he passed away in 1996. He was best know for his series featuring Chicago PI Mark Brandon, but he wrote several standalones featuring such one-off gumshoes as Johnny Maquis, Glen Ransom, Clifford Grant and Brad Sterling.
