Academy Award Theatre

Radio Anthology Series (1946)

ACADEMY AWARD THEATRE was a 1946 American radio anthology series that presented 30-minute adaptations of popular, and sometimes even Academy Award-winning films, often with the same cast. The show of most interest to visitors to this site will be the broadcast of The Maltese Falcon, complete with Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, and Sidney Greenstreet reprising their roles from John Huston’s screen version.

RADIO

  • ACADEMY THEATRE
    (1946, CBS)
    Half-hour drama anthology
Among the shows presented on Academy Award Theatre, of most interest to visitors to this site, is…

    • THE MALTESE FALCON
      30 minutes
Based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett
Starring Humphrey Bogart as SAM SPADE
      with Mary Astor, Sidney Greenstreet
The third radio adaptation of the classic novel, this time performed by the stars of John Huston’s film, but crammed into thirty minutes, it’s nothing but sad, sad, sad. The 1943 Lux Radio Theatre version is generally considered far superior.
Report respectfully submitted by Kevin Burton Smith. And thanks to sharp-eyed Randy for being so sharp-eyed.
