LANEY BIRD was once one of New York’s Finest, a detective who worked undercover, but then her personal life “imploded.” That’s when the single mom packed up her bags and became a small town dick (and sometime bus driver) in the upstate boondocks of Sylvan in Rockland County, where she’s determined to make her stand, and hopefully carve out a peaceful life for herself and her troubled teenage son Alfie.
Needless to say, things don’t quite turn out that way…
Hide in Place (2021) was an impressive debut, banging the domestic thriller drum with a flair even Harlan Coben, Linwood Barclay or Mary Higgins Clark could admire, set against a pitch-perfect distillation of small town life that goes far beyond the airbrushed cozyness of the Hallmark Channel, nailing that foreboding sense of unease, of something not-quite-right and possibly downright evil, that doesn’t need the bright lights of the big city to thrive. And it’s so damn refreshing to see a P.I. with a troubled teenage son–I was beginning to think detective’s were only able to have daughters.
