A good deed sucker punches Philly welterweight EDDIE CERO‘s life.
There he is, just minding his own, taking a short cut through an alley on a fine Philly night in 1962, when he stumbles upon two thugs beating the crap out of an old guy. Eddie steps in, and the grateful would-be victim returns the favour by offering his rescuer first a drink, and then a job.
Turns out the vic was SAL GIAMBRONI, a local shamus in need of someone who can provide a little leg work — and a little muscle. Fortunately, it turns out Eddie’s real good at both, despite his original reluctance. It’s the start of a beautiful friendship.
The Blue Door, a 2009 standalone, is a far cry from the turn-of-the-last-century “jass” world of New Orleans in which author Fulmer sets his acclaimed series featuring Creole private eye Valentin St. Cyr, but Philadelphia in the early days of what would become known as Philly Soul is a damned good substitute. In fact, if there’s any crime writer whose work should come with a playlist, it’s Fulmer.
