My Scrapbook: Garfield’s Babes & Bullets Production Cel

Garfield’s Babes & Bullets Production Cel

Nothing spectacular, maybe, and I was never a big Garfield fan (sorry, Stephen), but this production cell from the Emmy-winning 1989 animated television special Garfield’s Babes and Bullets, wherein Jim Davis’ famous feline makes like a private eye, still makes me smile. When it went up for sale at Heritage Auctions in early 2022, they noted that:

This original, hand-painted production cel features a huge image of the monochromatic detective with a sly look on his face. The image measures about 10″ x 8″ on its 12 field cel. The cel is labeled in its lower right corner with 21, and it has been set atop a color print of one of the layout drawings for this special for presentation. The condition of this cool piece is Very Good, with just minor handling and edge wear. (From the Jim Davis Collection).

They go on to helpfully point out that “In this image, Spayed prepares to go apprehend the murderer after he has just realized who the culprit must be, a moment which can be found at about the 19:28 mark of the special.”
