In Nightshade (2010), Ottawa “bedroom snooper” SAM MONTCALM gets in way over his head when his personal connection to a suspect in a high-profile Québec City murder case with international implications that reach far beyond Canada are discovered.
It’s an impressive debut, a Shamus finalist even (for Best Paperback Original), and at the time I hoped it was the start of a new series — it had been years since a viable P.I. had worked the mean (but well-maintained) streets of Canada’s national capital.
Unfortunately, only one sequel materialized, 2012’s Dark Alchemy, which had Sam following a woman suspected of cheating on her wealthy developer husband — all the way to Los Angeles. Things get more complicated when an old friend in LA hires him for her own purposes, and soon enough Sam’s bouncing around LA, like some crazy P.I. City Tour of the City of Angels, popping up in Westwood, Los Feliz, the Disney Concert Hall and even swapping lead at Angel’s Flight .
