My Scrapbook
Luke Cage, Page One

The above splash page, presented in all its pre-press, pasted-up, camera-ready glory, is from the very first issue of Luke Cage, Hero for Hire (June 1972), garnered a lot of attention when it came up for auction at Heritage Collectibles.
Not just because it’s one righteous, bad ass piece of comic book art (thank you penciller George Tuska and inker Billy Graham) but because the letterer for the issue, one Skip Kohloff, is apparently something of a mystery in comics.
His only credit seems to be this one particular comic, and while many a comics letterer has come and gone, their disappearance almost always easily explained by a quick glance at their work, Skip’s work is pretty solid. Stellar, even. In Heritage’s newsletter, published the same week the page went up for auction, they actually went through their attempts to track down the enigmatic Kohloff, which is a quest even I’m not a big enough nerd to take on, but as I said, that is one righteous, bad ass piece of comic book art.
As befits a righteous, bad ass superhero private eye like Luke Cage. Enjoy.
