Affable jeans-and-sneakers-clad CATE HARLOW is a New York City P.I. with more than a few irons in the fire. Her best friend, Melissa, is a hooker; she’s bouncing back and forth between two men (her ex-husband Will, a former NYPD detective, and Giles, a hunky ME who works for the city), and she also has to deal with her snootier-than-thou part-time secretary Myrtle, who disapproves of both of them.
Still, as the sole investigator for Catherine Harlow Private Investigations, she’s a pretty good detective — even if she does say so herself.
“To say I’m very good at my job is an understatement. It’s not vanity, it’s a fact. I can get into a lot of places that other PIs can’t. Maybe it’s my looks. I don’t look threatening. I’m five-five, fairly athletic and blonde. Not a dumb blonde, either. I speak softly and listen carefully. People tell me things they wouldn’t mention tosomeone who looks tough and street-smart. Let’s say that they do underestimate me and I am very good at what I do.”
A former forensic linguist, she lives in a brownstone with two cats, drives a Ford Edge SUV, and she’s lives a pretty much low-maintenance life, her one indulgence apparently “silky, girly lingerie” It’s that clear-eyed, no-nonsense sense of self that won me over, plus there’s a nice mix of grit, compassion and just enough humour in the first-person narration to keep things going.
Plus, I sorta dig the blonde in jeans on the first few covers. Sexy, but not cheesecake.
