Who says the North has all the fun?
Fans of The Drive-By Trucker’s Dirty South album ought to get a kick out of ENNIS SKINNER, a fallen Alabama football star recently sprung from prison after a ten-year stretch. All Ennis wants to do is do right, and take care of his ailing father, a one-time leading light of the Civil Rights movement.
Unfortunately, Montgomery, Alabama is a town that doesn’t forget — or forgive easily.
In his debut, Dixie Noir (2009), Ennis is roped into looking for the damaged nineteen-year old daughter of the woman responsible for his downfall.
I wasn’t kidding about the “Dirty South,” by the way — Ennis’s South is a Confedate-flag wavin’ stewpot of racism, meth, corruption, sweat, piss, jizz and blood — and it felt like Dixie Noir may have marked the debut of a major new character.
Except there was never a follow-up. The author, a passionate devotee of all things F. Scott Fitzgerald, hasn’t gone near crime fiction since.
