Tootsie Carter

Created by M. Ravenal

The Arrangement (2021) marks the debut of  hard-boiled African-American private eye TOOTSIE CARTER, who takes on 1975 New York City armed only with “a snub-nosed Colt .38, unmatchable wit, and a pocketful of Tootsie Rolls.”

It’s the first book in the proposed Plainclothes Tootsie Mystery series, which is planned for 26 future books, following the alphabet-inspired naming convention last used by Sue Grafton in her Kinsey Millhone series.

According to the ambitious author, “Tootsie is a snarky, no-nonsense gal who fights the good fight. Tootsie’s character began as a series of light-hearted children’s short stories that I’d written back in 2012. The stories chronicled Tootsie’s childhood in 1956. Eventually, I hope to compile those early short stories together into a single book (or a series of compilations) to be published. A lot of the characters from the short stories make appearances in the later books.”
