Jason Wilder

Created by Michael Siverling

The Midnight Investigations Agency is arguably the best private eye outfit in River City, California, conveniently located on the 1300 block of Galleon Street, right in the heart of downtown.

The Agency is headed by Victoria Wilder, a former River City Detective, and manned by a team of highly skilled investigators (and a one-eyed German shepherd named Beowulf) who pride themselves on handling all types of matters, from missing persons and executive protection to homicide trial preparation.

Their chief investigator is twenty-something JASON WILDER. Although Jason’s the most junior member of the staff, he’s been trained in the art of detection almost from birth. And he’s the only one in the business who can legitimately call the boss “Mother.”

Fans of such classic mismatched detective teams as Nero Wolfe & Archie Goodwin and Bertha Cool & Donald Lam will recognize the chemistry that’s in ample evidence here, but Siverling adds a contemporary edge to the proceedings that raises it up a notch or two, and bodes well for the series. In fact, the debut, The Sterling Inheritance, won the 2002 St. Martin’s Press Private Eye Writers of America Best First Private Eye Novel Contest, and the second in the series, The Sorceror’s Circle, followed in December 2006.

THE EVIDENCE

  • Victoria: “I love you son.”
Jason: “I’m moderately fond of you too, lady.”

UNDER OATH

  • “The plot, like the title, has Raymond Chandler overtones, including a wealthy family, a soft son accused of murder and a tough, disillusioned older sister. But Siverling adds enough clever modern touches, especially in the relationship between Victoria and Jason, to make this look like the start of a promising series.”
