Now here’s something you don’t see everyday….

A brother and sister detective team.

First-person narrator ANDERSON WEST and his impulsive and flaky, soft-hearted kid sister CARRIE ANDERSON are the entire staff of Virginia’s West Investigations. He’s the serious one, the straight arrow handling the detective chores; she manages the office (poorly), does online research (better) and, occasionally, much against Anderson’s wishes, does a little impromptu leg work (often illegal). Anderson’s a widower, the grown up with two children and their mother to take care of; Carrie’s single, foot loose and fancy free, with lousy work habits and a checkered past, including a felony conviction.

In their only appearance to date, 2020’s I Know Where You Sleep, the mismatched siblings are approached by Jessica Smith, a twenty-something waitress who’s the victim of a series of unwanted and increasingly troubling phone calls, they take the case.

Pro-bono, at Carrie’s insistence.

But what they both think will be a a simple case escalates into breaking and entering, assault, increasing violence, assorted legal threats from the suspects (including the reverend at Jessica’s church and a couple of Jessica’s boyfriends, past and present), and Jessica herself, whose past is also a little checkered, it turns out.

I Know Where You Sleep was a Shamus Award finalist for Best First PI Novel.

UNDER OATH

  • “Sleep is one thing that readers won’t get much of when they pick up this stellar novel! Gripping from first page to last, Orloff’s I Know Where You Sleep virtually defines the psychological thriller. And Anderson and Carrie are two of the most compelling—and appealing—heroes in crime fiction to come along in years. You’ll love them just as much as you’ll be swept up by Orloff’s brilliant plot.”
