TOR KELSEY, who carries the ball in The Edge, a thriller that takes place on a transcontinental train that's crossing Canada. Tor is an investigator for the Jockey Club (presumably one of David Cleveland's subordinates, since Francis doesn't use the title "chief investigator").
Dick Francis is, of course, the British champion jockey-turned-thriller writer famous for his horse-racing themed mysteries. His crippled champion jockey-turned-private eye Sid Halley, who appeared in three books, and spawned a TV series, is probably his best known character.
