Created by Lawrence Sanders
(1920-98)
“My name is Joshua Bigg: a joke life played on me, as I am quite small. Five feet, three and three-eighths inches, to be precise. In a world of giants, those eighths are precious to a midget.”
I’m not sure if we’re allowed to use “midget” anymore, but JOSHUA BIGG is certainly no giant among men. Orphaned at the tender age of three and the product of an almost Dickensian childhood (in Iowa, no less), he eventually makes his way to the Big Apple, and lands a gig at Tabatchnick, Orsini, Reilly and Teitelbaum (TORT), a prestigious New York law firm.
There, he mostly tracks down witnesses and escorts them to court, verifies clients’ alibis, and rounds up expert witnesses, but the ambitious young investigator steps up, looking into the mysterious suicide of a wealthy client in The Tenth Commandment (1980), one of author Lawrence Sanders‘ “Commandment” novels. The trail soon leads to a bizarre religious racket.
And yes, a few rolls in the hay for the still boyish-looking Joshua (he’s twenty-six).
Joshua is yet another of Lawrence Sanders’ almost-private eyes, most of whom work for large corporations and whose dealings invarably involve the rich and powerful. If you like Joshua, check out Dora Conti, Samual Todd, Mary Lou “Dunk” Bateson, Timothy Cone or Wolf Lannihan. And if you’re into something a bit breezier, you could try Archy McNally.
‘CAUSE THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO…
- “Thou shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
— Exodus 20:17
