August High

Created by Dan Ames

Yet another private eye cranked out by the Dan Ames Fiction Factory, AUGUST HIGH is a Detroit-based gumshoe in a series of  “fast-paced, action-packed” short novels.

I say “fast-paced, action-packed” because that’s exactly how each book is described on its Amazon page.

Repetitious? If you like things to stay the same, this series is for you. Every cover is almost the same as the last one. Every title is almost the same as the last one.

The tale of how his name came to be (his mother, a pregnant drug addict, was too stoned to give the father’s name when she gave birth one August, and so some jaded hospital nurse just wrote in “High”) is repeated in each book, as is his size (6’6″, 300 pounds). And the plots (Spenser-lite) and even the obligatory five-star Amazon reviews seem suspiciously repetitive.

But hey, we’re told that this Dan Ames character is a USA Today best-selling author, and predictability and prolificacy seem to be working for him. Or she. Or them.

Hard to tell, because there’s scant biographical info available, even on the “official” web page. But Dan Ames is also the byline attached to the Jack Reacher’s Special Investigators and the Jack Reacher Cases, both set in the Jack Reacher universe by permission of Lee Child, as well as a mountain of other series and occasional standalones under the Dan Ames name, featuring  private eyes such as John Rockne, Jake Palmer, Mary Cooper, Burr Ashland, Wade Carver, Jewel Savage & Henry Bevel, and one private investigator/bounty hunter known simply as The Garbage Collector
